What is an Artificial Limb?

An artificial limb, also known as a prosthesis, is a medical device designed to replace a missing or amputated limb. These prosthetics are custom-made to fit each patient’s specific needs, ensuring they mimic the appearance, function, and feel of a natural limb. Whether the amputation is due to trauma, disease, or congenital conditions, artificial limbs allow individuals to regain lost functions such as walking, grasping objects, and even performing complex tasks.

The goal of prosthetics is to restore not only physical abilities but also to improve the patient’s emotional well-being by enhancing self-esteem and promoting independence.

Symptoms Leading to the Need for an Artificial Limb

There are various reasons why individuals may need an artificial limb, but it is important to understand that prosthetics are used after the amputation of a limb. The reasons for amputation can include:

  • Trauma or injury: Accidents, such as car crashes or workplace accidents, may result in the need for limb amputation.
  • Chronic conditions: Diseases such as diabetes, vascular disease, or cancer can sometimes lead to the loss of limbs when other treatments are not viable.
  • Congenital limb deficiencies: Some individuals are born without certain limbs or with limb abnormalities that can be corrected using prosthetics.
  • Infections: Severe infections that affect the limb, when left untreated, may lead to amputation.

When a patient faces one of these conditions and undergoes limb loss, an artificial limb is often the key to restoring mobility, improving quality of life, and increasing independence.

Rehabilitation Process

The rehabilitation process for individuals with artificial limbs is a comprehensive journey that includes both physical therapy and psychological support. The goal is to help patients not only adapt to their new limb but also regain the skills necessary to perform everyday tasks.

Step 1: Pre-Prosthetic Assessment

Before a prosthetic limb is fitted, an assessment is conducted to evaluate the patient’s overall health, limb condition, and specific needs. This includes physical evaluations, such as muscle strength, skin integrity, and the size of the residual limb. Psychological assessments are also important to determine the patient’s readiness for rehabilitation and to address any emotional concerns.

Step 2: Prosthetic Fitting

Once the assessment is complete, our skilled specialists work with patients to select the right type of prosthetic for their needs. At Balaji Robotic Rehab Hospital, we offer custom-fitted prosthetics using state-of-the-art technology, including leading brands like OTTOBOCK, the world’s foremost brand in artificial limbs.

The fitting process ensures the prosthetic aligns perfectly with the patient’s body and provides maximum comfort. Whether the prosthetic is for the upper limb (hand, arm) or lower limb (foot, leg), the goal is to achieve natural-looking and functional movement.

Step 3: Gait Training and Rehabilitation

Once the prosthetic is fitted, gait training becomes an essential part of the rehabilitation process, especially for lower limb amputees. Gait training helps patients learn to walk, run, and even engage in activities like dancing or climbing stairs with their new limb.

Through physical therapy, patients work with our expert therapists to strengthen their muscles, improve balance, and practice various movements necessary for daily activities. This phase ensures that the patient regains coordination and stability, crucial for reducing the risk of falls and improving overall quality of life.

Step 4: Psychological Support and Adjustment

Amputation is not only a physical challenge but also an emotional one. Psychological counselling helps individuals cope with the loss of a limb, and it is an integral part of the rehabilitation process. Our clinic provides emotional support to help patients accept their new reality, build confidence, and foster a positive outlook on life.

Step 5: Ongoing Support and Adjustment

Prosthetic devices are not static—they need to be adjusted and replaced over time. As patients’ bodies change, the fit of the prosthetic may need to be altered. Additionally, some individuals may require new prosthetics as they progress in their rehabilitation, particularly in the case of children or those with changing physical needs. Our team provides continuous care and follow-up services to ensure that each patient receives the ongoing support they need to thrive with their artificial limb.

When to Start Rehabilitation

It is crucial to begin rehabilitation as soon as possible after limb loss. Early rehabilitation helps prevent muscle atrophy and prepares the body for the prosthetic fitting. Ideally, patients should begin rehabilitation soon after the surgical wound has healed and the residual limb has stabilized.

Starting rehabilitation early helps with the following

  • Improved adjustment: The quicker a patient gets used to their new limb, the easier it will be for them to regain independence.
  • Better functional outcomes: Early therapy leads to faster improvement in movement, balance, and strength.
  • Psychological benefits: Early intervention provides emotional support to cope with the trauma of limb loss and fosters a sense of hope for the future.

Services We Offer

  • Custom-Fitted Prosthetics
  • Gait Training and Rehabilitation
  • Robotic and Advanced Therapy
  • Psychological Counselling
  • Follow-up and Adjustments

Unlike conventional prosthetics that may feel unnatural or limit mobility, our customized, high-tech solutions offer a seamless, comfortable experience, empowering patients to embrace life without limitations.
